Durbar Square, the place of coronation & reign of the erstwhile kings of Nepal, is the historic center of Kathmandu. The complex boasts of Nepal’s most remarkable traditional architecture. This delightful garden is an oasis of peace in the chaotic jumble of Kathmandu. Built in 1920s as a private garden, it was renovated and opened to public in 2007. The garden is characterized by elegant detailing, fountains & ponds, a marble inscription from Omar Khayam’s “Rubaiyat”, and a quirky little hidden garden.
This royal palace of Kathmandu gets its name from the statue of the Monkey God (Hanuman) placed at its entrance (Dhoka). Brilliant architecture, handsome courtyards and exquisite sculptures are the insignia of this magnificent palace.
Souvenir shopping is best done in Thamel. Tibetan memorabilia, images of deities, colorful masks, Nepali shawls & caps and good quality trekking gear, can all be bought here. Also check out Asan Tole, the bustling market area, for a whole lot of trinkets & knick knacks.
Quirky cafes in Thamel and Freak Street are the best places to eat in Kathmandu. From Tibetan momos & thupka to Nepali dal-bhat and gundruk, the food here is quite delicious. Do try Sela roti and Jaju Dhau for some sweet gastronomic delight.
