History of the Taj Mahal

Dating back to 1630 AD, Taj Mahal signifies Shah Jahan’s love for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Shah Jahan poured all his love, wealth and passion into creating something so beautiful & ethereal, that it is hailed as an emblem of love even after centuries. Masons, stonecutters, inlayers, carvers, painters, calligraphers, dome-builders and other artisans were requisitioned from India, Central Asia and Iran; and it took approximately 22 years to build this monument of love.

Architecture of the Taj Mahal

The main building is built with white marble while the two on its sides have been constructed with red sandstone. The arch and dome of the Taj Mahal are embellished with semi-precious stones, exhibiting the intricate work of the craftsmen. The four pillars of Taj Mahal lean slightly outwards to protect the mausoleum in case the pillars collapsed. The interiors of the monument are embellished with exquisite calligraphy, beautiful motifs encrusted with precious stones. Its Persian styled gardens, studded with beautiful fountains, add to its timeless beauty.
